Corruption in India is a hot issue these days. Whether it’s the telecom scam or the commonwealth scam, the state exchequer has been drained of billions of rupees; and is perhaps being done with blatant disregard either for the law and order machinery or the constitution or any other vigilance mechanism, even as I write this article. With Anna Hazare emerging as the New Age Gandhi there is a faint ray of hope, of reducing corruption, if not wiping it out completely. However, pardon me for my skepticism, being an Indian and having had been first hand victim of corruption in government offices, as well as other places, it is still hard to believe that corruption can actually be reduced, or at least controlled by a single bill, i.e. Jan Lokpal Bill.
Nevertheless, it gives me immense satisfaction that at least someone has raised his voice against corruption in India and is also being supported by millions of People across India, as well as across the world. Although not an active member of this projected revolution (mainly due to disbelief in its success), I nevertheless extend my support to Anna for providing Indians with a ray of hope that not all is lost.
But what makes me skeptic about the success of this revolution and the lokpal bill as whole is the fact that corruption is a deep rooted concept in India, so much so that we have actually accepted it as a way of life. Corruption exists in almost all fields. Do not fool yourself into believing that it’s just the government machinery which has been affected. The private sector isn’t really far behind as well, when it comes to corruption.
Corruption in India exists in various forms. Whether its bribery, or adulteration in products and services, circulation of counterfeit currency, or non performance of duties, corruption is rampant. So if you look around you will find corruption in its various avatars affecting our lives in some way or the other. As a matter of fact, it is even possible that many of those who are out on the streets in support of the “Chhota Gandhi” have been engaged in corruption, albeit in a relatively lower proportion. So, when we break traffic rules, when we spit on the streets, when we break a queue, when we refuse to lend a helping hand to our fellow citizens, when we engage in eve teasing, when we continue to be engaged in caste/community/gender/religion based differentiation, or even when we don’t raise our voice against a wrong doing in our presence, we are engaging in corruption.
So, corruption can only be wiped out from the face of India, if every Indian performs his/her duties with full devotion, diligence and selflessness, which incidentally is next to impossible.
